โ€œShe Streatches the limitsโ€ –  Written by: Anat Kon-Aman

Debi Oulu sculpts genitals and creates provocative multimedia works. In an interview, she tries to explain the line between the art sexuality studies and pornography.

For three years Debi Oulu, a sculptor and multimedia artist, sculpts penises, vaginas, buttocks and breasts, to explore her sexuality and allow those viewing her work to take an active part and explore through their own sexuality as well. Through her โ€‹โ€‹work she seeks to uncover the truth and make the viewer go through the process of shedding all the layers, which is similar to the process that she experienced herself. In her artworks, Debi shows the range between what is normative and what is considered forbidden and a “taboo”. She examines the way we are ready to introduce ourselves in front of the world as sexual beings, and how much we are willing to reveal our longings, desires, passions, and deviations.

“I asked myself, who am I as a woman? Am I just a mother, a wife, a daughter or a sister?” Says Debi, “What about my sexual wishes and desires? Am I allowed to express them when I am functioning in one or more of these roles society expects me to take? I thought it was time to dare to reveal another side that was hidden in me, the aspect of sex, and so bond with myself in a more complete way “.

Debi’s works in general, and her multimedia works in particular, force the viewer to come closer and take an active part in the process. Her works are defiant, bold, mischievous, boundary breaking and force the viewer to contemplate his sexuality and sexuality in general. “I want to deal with my fears and what I need to understand about myself. Other people can relate to that because I don’t try to preach or teach, I just try showing the doubts and questions. I explore the sensitive spots that we don’t usually go to.”

Debi’s work “the year that I came out of the closet”, expresses the personal process she went through. “I’ve been dealing with sexuality for about ten years, but only in the last three years I dared to “come out of the closet” and deal with it publicly. I express the ability of women to externalize their sexuality and to bring out aspects that usually remain hidden.”

Debi is married to a high-tech man and has three children aged 11, 14 and 15. They live in a bourgeoisie penthouse apartment in Yahud, and her works fill the house.

How do you deal with the responses of your husband and children?

“They have to deal with me. I would do anything for my family. But is sacrificing ourselves good for the family? Women are the family leaders. When the woman puts the priority of her husband or children before her own, it’s not a healthy condition for her or for the family. My partner is the exact opposite of me. He is an introvert, reclusive person, but he really loves me and understands I need to do what I like and what is important to me. “

Debi says that two of children accept her work with understanding, but the third child, a teenager, feels ashamed and embarrassed, especially in front of his friends. Therefore she removed all the works that disturbed him from the public space of the house, including the sculpture of “The masturbating man” to be discussed below. Her husband’s extended family, of Moroccan origin, accepts it as well, and has learned to accept her job. Even her 72-year-old mother, a conservative woman, supports her. “She came, saw all the works,” says Debi with an impish gleam in her eyes, “and brought all her friends a week later.”

“One can do anything if he stands behind and is whole with it. If there is a gap between who you feel inside and what you or what you show out, you live a lie in, everything is fake and you can’t be happy. If you are not hiding nor referring it as something shameful, others will treat it that way as well. Everything is a question of how much we live in peace with ourselves and how we present ourselves to others. “

So who are you, Debi Oulu? Introduce yourself.

“I am a 46 year old woman, a mother of three children. I didn’t have a difficult childhood, I wasn’t trying to commit suicide, and I’m not a lesbian. There is no Pandora’s Box behind my back. I’m real, not trying to present a persona. I am not lying, not in life nor in my art, eventually I discovered my true self, it is the most interesting. We spot fake people right away. “

In your works you are checking limits. What are your limits about sex?

“The fact I’m an open person does not mean I don’t have limits and will do anything. I will not take part in an orgy, I have no problem with the concept, but I wouldn’t want my husband or kids to get hurt. I am a normative person, but I have no problem others to do what they want as long as it is consensual sex between adults.

I have very developed fantasies, but won’t accomplish even a quarter of those things. The artist has the privilege to engage in sexuality without fulfilling the fantasy in reality, however, if I fantasize something that’s the reality I experience, at that moment, so basically it’s a kind of fulfillment in an imaginary reality. “

How did you begin dealing with sexuality?

“I’m interested in the question of reality in light of how we look at it. I had noticed that the cock started to ‘pop’ into my works. I tried to think why this is happening, and I realized that it became a kind of object that represents so much in our lives and that it should become an object of art study. Sexuality is a very substantial part of our lives. “

Most of your works feature the male sex organ, what about the female organ? Why does it have less expression?

“Maybe because I’m a woman and I’m curious about the male organ,” says Debi. I wonder with her and offer additional possibilities. Perhaps because the penis is prominent, external, and can be found in a state of discouragement or stall, and another thing, the penis is the penetrating organ and therefore represents something more forceful and aggressive.

In most cases, the vagina is represented in art through flowers, like in the orchid photographs of Robert Miiflt’orf and in the paintings of Georgia O’Keefe, both are scandalous artists. Debi Oulu has chosen to represent the vagina through other images. One of them is reflected in the work “Frigid Vagina”, presented at the Dirty Show exhibit in Chicago, and then in various exhibitions in Israel. This is a photo of a real ice tunnel in Austria, a tunnel formed in a glacier that survived the ice age, and you can explore it. While the temperature outside the tunnel is the freezing cold of minus forty degrees, inside the tunnel the temperature is zero degrees. Really warm and cozy as in the vagina. In addition, the lighting inside the tunnel created yellowish red hot shades.

“I believe”, writes Debi on its website, “our sexual identity is embedded in us from birth. If we can explore, discover and accept our sexual identity, we can get a kind of honesty with ourselves, and live in peace with ourselves. My art is part of this investigation…. I invite you (the viewers in the exhibition) to discover your sexual identity through my art. “

Debi joins a long line of artists such as Andy Warhol, Kiki Smith, Robert Miiflt’orf, Jeff Koons, Louise Bourgeois and others who did not hesitate to examine the definitions of what is considered normative in front of what is considered as a deviation, and stretch the limits of sexuality through their works.

One cannot but wonder about the border that passes between works of art dealing with a very blatant sexuality, and erotica and pornography.

“I’m not an erotic artist. I didn’t create the works in order to stimulate, I wanted to raise questions. I would like to make it so that anyone looking for his inner purpose in the sexual sense, so that we can identify what motivates us, what makes us desire. The normative society defines what is right and what is deviant. We grow up and learn to hide what is considered “aberration”. But everyone has some deviation or longing for something considered a deviation in the society or culture in which he lives. My sculpture “The masturbating man”, (presented in the exhibition “Transformation” in January 2012 in Tel Aviv), represents a natural human action that’s essential for our development. Each and every consultant will explain that it’s healthy to masturbate but according to the Jewish religion it is considered a sin. Education classes don’t really talk about it or encourage it. I grew up in a conservative family. We kept kosher, I celebrated my Bat-Mitzvah, I went to a Jewish school. I still keep kosher; my husband’s family is traditional. I want to be a believer but it’s very difficult for me because of how religion relates to sexuality. I have an unpublished series of photographs of different sexual representations using religious artifacts. In this series I wanted to explore how religion forces us to its rules and prohibitions and controls us.

A friend, a well-known artist, suggested me once not to present things in such an apparent way. But I want to put it bluntly on the table. Openly show the naked truth. The series has not been published yet in this country because there’s high sensitivity in the subject of religion. This is a too extreme provocation that has no place now in the form of my life. But I want to expose the motives that form a taboo, social norms, precepts and prohibitions, and the eagerness of various mechanisms to enforce them. In fact, It’s the way of the mechanism, any mechanism, whether religious, political, or social, to control us. “

Incisive questions about the link between art, pornography and violence, and the authority figured controlling mechanism question, were also presented in the movie “Clockwork Orange” (1971) directed by Stanley Kubrick. This outrageous film caused controversy for many years, has been considered an immoral film in England for many years and its screening was banned. The film brought rather different ethical questions, including questions about the power the society is able to put on the citizen on behalf of social order, and the control of civilians through these power mechanisms. In Alex’s mind (the hero of the film), the violent act is seen as something beautiful, aesthetic and artistic, just like classical music which he hears in his mind when making actions. In other words, sadistic violence and blatant and brutal sexuality brings him elation, just as classical music and art brings other people elation. For Alex, violence needs inspiration, just like in art. In the second part of the film, Alex is treated by the company through a particularly violent experiment in which he goes through a process of reformation. Which of course raises the incisive question, whether violent and sadistic behavior is legitimate when it is activated by the mechanism in order to suppress the expression of the individual citizen’s violence, even when the justification for this is to protect the society?

The film’s opening scene takes place in a pub where the tables and drink taps were designed as statues of women in erotic poses. The scene is very sterile, aesthetic, carefully designed, and directs to the question to be asked again and again throughout the movie, is it art? Is it pornography? Questions about the boundaries and nature of the art also rise in the scene at the Cat Woman’s house, which is full of art works that it’s not clear whether they are erotic or pornographic. One of the outstanding works of art that appear in this scene, is a kinetic sculpture of a giant penis painted in white, it is the work of the artist Hermann Kinks. The scene at the artist’s house raises questions as to the difference between gross and violent attitude to sexuality as perceived and performed by Alex and his friends, compared to the legitimacy given to the artist to engage in blatant sexuality bordering on pornography under the title “art”.

Do you think the artist’s preoccupation in “Clockwork Orange” is pornography?

“No. Art allows you to say things that are unacceptable. The privilege of the artist is the legitimacy to say what he wants, the way he sees fit. To some extent, the artist is like a “court jester” and is allowed to say anything. The artist’s sexuality is not violent, as opposed to Alex’s and his gang’s, for whom sexuality is an act of violence, intentionally offensive, a means of control and a way to enjoy and derive pleasure from the suffering of others “.

What is the difference between works of art depicting the male or female organ and stores that sell sex toys sex? There are currently accessories are designed by artists, with psychedelic colors.

“The difference is the goal. Sex toys are designed to please. They are not defined as art but remain within product designs, beautiful and decorated as they are. My works are intended to raise questions. Even when I put a pencil sharpener shaped like buttocks, when a pencil tip is designed to get into a hole that mimics the rectum, it’s a work of art and not a product design for sexual pleasure. This sharpener isn’t sold commercially but is a single art work. Beyond that, more important are the questions I am raising with it. I ask – why did we, our society, have a problem with the asshole? After all, it’s a sexual organ too. Physiologically, it has lots of nerves that contribute to sexual stimulation when there’s friction, not to mention the mental thrill of being part of an allegedly “forbidden” sexual contact. There is a connotation to homosexuality and reference to sexual habits that are seen as a form of sexual perversion, like pushing objects into the anus. The threatening sharpened pencil also suggests a BDSM relationship. “

Another Daring and provocative work of Debi Oulu is “Acquired Taste” that was presented in the Sin-City gallery in Las Vegas. In this work Debi presented three martinis on a tray with a used condom hanging from each glass, its contents dumped into them and an olive floats over the semen. Debi created this work following a meeting with porn star Delilah Strong, famous for drinking the semen of 11 different men (!) using a Martini glass. In response to Debi’s question, how can you drink so much semen without vomiting, Delilah said that it’s an “acquired taste”, just as we acquire taste for coffee, beer and smoking. Once accustomed to the taste, Delilah added, she often freezes sperm in her freezer ice trays and snacks on it whenever she wants.

If you feel the same as I do, and you want to vomit now, think about the different eating habits around the globe. Apparently taste is a matter of geography and cultural and religious ties. In France, a scallop oyster is considered a delicacy, and in general it is perceived in Western culture as a stimulant sort, when the shell simulates a vagina and its contents – a body fluid. Even so, it’s served as an appetizer at fancy restaurants and is drawn with great pleasure by the diners.

Debi Oulu invites the audience to her exhibitions to interactively examine the perception of its sexuality. In the “Intimacy” project that she produced during a party organized by a group of alternative art named “OH MY G*D” at the “Maxim” night club, Debi invited random people to photograph themselves in a separate room and express the concept of intimacy as they understand it. In the room there were scarves and masks for the participants and they decided whether to use them and how. All the participants knew these photographs will be distributed on the Internet. It’s amazing what participants chose to do on camera.

In the group exhibition “Vanilla Sex” in Tel Aviv, that its main theme was “Fetishes” and their connection to passion, Debi Oulu introduced a Video-Art clip called “My erotic Video-Art”. This is a four-minute segment shown in Cine Kink, โ€‹โ€‹New York’s Film Festival, in which Debi explores her attitude towards male sexuality by sculpting a penis using the technique of pottery design.

Debi, wearing black bra and panties, is designing a clay penis on a wheel, and it’s rising as she slips her fingers on it. The process which looks like a woman masturbating a man is carried out right in front of the face of a man sitting across from her chair. In doing so she sneaks seductive glances at him, from which it’s implied that this act of sculpture is not an act of seduction but of defiance.

“I wasn’t photographed nude,” she says, “because I thought it would be too much for my children and husband.”

As part of her “Fetish” themed exhibition, Debi introduced one of the depictions of the most common sexual fetish, feminine high heels. The work is called “Fuck me shoes”, when in fact, the high heels are designed in the shape of a male sex organ.

Another fetishistic sexual representation is “Cinder-Fuck-Me-Ella shoes”, shoes made of transparent hypoxia with the toes designed in the shape on a tongue making its way into a vagina. There is no better fetishistic symbol than Cinderella’s glass shoe, the legendary shoe that has been shaped to fit a single organ of a single woman in the whole world, the gentle foot of Cinderella. In my opinion, based on the familiar story, the perfect match between the foot and the shoe represents the match between the prince, who is the master that holds the shoe, and the mopey servant. He is destined to rescue her from the gutter, become her exclusive owner, and make her a princess. But here Debi Oulu changes Cinderella from a delicate and passive girl (sinking under the burden, humiliated by her mother and sisters, led by a fairy, adopted by the prince); to a feminist girl with the provocative statement “Fuck Me”.

Oulu is a complex surprising, witty and engaging artist. Her art collection is very varied and also includes political and other works, for example, a series of bears trapped in transparent hypoxia that look like imprisoned inmates in the Ice Age or in amber. This work was presented in the “Imagination 2012” exhibition sponsored by “Bank Hapoalim”, and its revenues were dedicated to fighting AIDS.

The Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea, NY chose her as one of a hundred groundbreaking artists, invited to present their works at an auction that its revenue was dedicated for the legitimate acceptance of the gay community in the United States. In this auction, Debi presented the sculpture “The masturbating man” and the “Cinder-Fuck-Me-Ella shoe”.

She holds a BA from the University of San Diego in the U.S., behind her are three years of art studies in the open course of “Beit Berl College” and there’s a lot of practical experience under her belt, including participation in various exhibitions in Israel and throughout the U.S… Nonetheless, the Israeli art institution “Bezalel” doesn’t agree to accept her to MFA studies.

But a woman like Debi does not give up easily. In response to the refusal, she started a campaign and opened a Facebook page called “Accept her”. In the “Fresh Paint” exhibition that was held in May 2012, Debi has taken an almost provocation measure when she walked around barely naked with a huge placard attached to her body front and back which read “LIKE ME”, along with a barcode that sent the scanners to her Facebook page.

Debi does not stop examining the reality and challenging the boundaries. If you think a 46-year-old talented artist, that wants to continue to develop and enrich herself, is entitled to have this opportunity, enter her Facebook page and press “Like”.
