“Debi Oulu – An Artist without Borders” by Dr. Dalia Hakker-Orion, Art Critic

(Dr. Dalia Hakker-Orion has been part of the art scene  for more that 40 years.  She is an Art critic, art historian, lecturer, curator, creator, and journalist.  She has lectured at Tel Aviv University for over 20 years, has written books and articles about art and lectured abroad.)

Debi Oulu’s art works are interesting, surprising and fascinating. She is part of the contemporary art scene and adds her original quality. Her creations form a phase in the fascinating way which opens before her, as she proceeds with pleasure, full with creative ideas, interactive combinations, multimedia applications and an outstanding artistic talent. Her ability to combine her theoretical knowledge in the field of communication with the variety of modern materials and techniques enables her to materialize her interdisciplinary ideas, to design and create art objects and to connect to the main stream of contemporary art. Her works are intriguing, witty, humoristic, and naughty.

The artist was born in Arizona, grew up in a Jewish, intellectual, Zionist home. She was exposed to the world of art through the paintings, sculptures and music (violin) of her father. She studied communication at the University of San Diego in California (UCSD) and immigrated to Israel in 1989. In Israel she married, raised a family with 3 children and lives a bourgeois life in a spacious penthouse in Yahud.  Behind her settled appearance and kosher kitchen, exist a free personality who wants to express herself.  She compares the process she is undergoing to the peeling of onion with its many layers.

Her installations, Video art, and multimedia creations express her desire to reveal the naked truth, to connect, touch and find the common denominator between all people. She enjoys also the process of creating and her artistic way.

Alongside her work as a three dimensional animator, conducting laughter groups, and raising a family, she studied art both privately and at the Beit Berl School of Art. She wanted to express herself in a different way and her encounter with the sculpture and teacher Prof. Harry Andersen broadened her technical knowledge and caused her to reveal new ways of creation and the almost infinite possibilities of using materials and castings.

In his studio and in her private atelier she materializes in a dazzling tempo her ideas and original designs. The breaking of barriers between reality and art on the one hand and between different aspects of art and science, which is typical to contemporary art, is expressed in her special works. According to her words:  “I’ve reached the stage in which I want to put everything on the table and to combine all the facets of my personality.”  In the last year she began to exhibit her works intensively in exhibitions like “Vanilla Sex” in Tel Aviv. She exhibited mainly male organs in different materials and combinations exploring its artistic qualities. For example : as a red pencil sharpener, a lamp combining it with a human brain, a mirror decoration, a  mobile containing words, and sexy high heeled shoes where instead of the heel she placed a male organ.

Already in her early stage of ceramic figures of mothers, children and bears, she made a less conventional sculpture of a masturbating man. After which she begun experimenting with polymer materials and created the mummified bear. After what she calls, “the year of the teddy bears”, she began to create art mainly of male genitalia and to represent the attraction between the sexes, seduction through sculpture, video art and multimedia.

Her installation art, “Hold on Tight”, was accepted to the Seattle Erotic Art Festival. Male and female genitals, buttocks, mouth and breasts are used as containers and hand and foot holders; like in an indoor climbers’ wall. The use of naked figures as a part of functional object appears in some of the Pop artist Jim Dine, like a standing woman in a coat hanger and a woman standing on her hands and knees as a base of a table. Also the artist Ilana Gur created a wall hanger made from male organs. In contrast to them Debi Oulu adds interactive and multimedia elements which elevate her works from a static object to a comprehensive experience which enables the visitors to touch and become part of the art work.

עבודותיה של דבי אולו מעניינות, מפתיעות ומרתקות. היא משתלבת בסצנת האמנות העכשווית ומוסיפה לה איכות מקורית. היא שופעת רעיונות יצירתיים, שלובים, אינטראקטיביים, שימוש במולטי מדיה וכשרון אמנותי מובחן. יכולתה לשלב את הידע התיאוריטי שרכשה בתחום התקשורת עם מגוון החומרים המודרניים, מאפשר לה לממש רעיונות אינטרדיסציםפלינריים, ליצור ולעצב חפצי אמנות שימושיים ומהנים מבחינה חזותית ולהתחבר לסצנה המרכזית של האמנות העכשווית.
האמנית ילידת ארצות הברית גדלה בבית יהודי ציוני, אינטלקטואלי, בו נחשפה מגיל צעיר לעולם האמנות דרך ציוריו, פסליו ונגינתו של אביה על כינור. היא למדה תקשורת באוניברסיטת קליפוניה סן דיגו (UCSD) והחליטה לעלות ארצה בשנת 1989. בארץ נישאה, הקימה משפחה למופת עם שלושה ילדים וחיה חיים בורגניים בפנטהאוס רחב ידיים ביהוד. מאחורי החזות המיושבת, הרעננה, השמירה על חוקי כשרות, מסתתרת אישיות תוססת, רבת פנים שמגלה בעולם האמנות חומרים חדשים ונושאים חדשים לבקרים. היא רוצה לבטא את מה שקרוב לליבה ומדמה עצמה לבצל שממנו ניתן להסיר הרבה קליפות ולגלות את מה שבפנים.
לצד עבודה כאנימטורית בתלת ממד, העברת סדנאות צחוק וגידול משפחה, למדה אמנות אצל יחזקאל כהן ומאוחר יותר במדרשה לאמנות בבית ברל. היא חיפשה לבטא את עצמה בדרך שונה והמפגש שלה עם הפסל והמורה פרופ’ הארי אנדרסן הרחיב את הידע הטכני שלה וגרם לה לגלות דרכי יצירה חדשות ואת אפשרויות השימוש הכמעט בלתי נדלות במגוון של חומרים ויציקות.
בסדנה שלו ובסדנה הפרטית שלה היא יוצרת חיבור בין לימודי התקשורת לבין עולם האמנות וממשת בקצב מסחרר את הרעיונות שעולים במוחה לכלל עיצובים מקוריים, מלאי הומור, המשלבים קריצה וחיבור לצד הארוטי של החיים. שבירת התחומים בין המציאות ובין האמנות מחד ובין תחומים שונים של אמנות ומדע המאפיינת את האמנות העכשווית מוצאת את ביטויה בעבודותיה המיוחדות. לדבריה: ” אני הגעתי לשלב בו אני רוצה לשים הכל על השולחן ולשלב את כל הצדדים של אישיותי”.
שני מיצבים אמנותיים שלה התקבלו ל Seattle Erotic Art Festival .. השימוש בדמויות וארוטיות ההופכות לכלי “שימושי מופיע לדוגמה ביצירותיו של אמן הפופ ארט האמריקאי ג’ים דאיין שיצר קולבים העשויות מדמויות נשים אירוטיות ושולחן שאת בסיסו מהווה אישה עירומה העומדת על ארבע. גם הפסלת אילנה גור יצרה קולב המוצב במוזיאון אילנה גור המורכב מאברי מין גבריים. בניגוד אליהם נוספים אצל דבי אולואלמנטים של אינטראקטיביות ומולטי מדיה המשדרגים את העבודות מאלמנט סטטי לדינמי ומאפשרים למתבוננים לחוות חוויות ולהיות חלק מהעבודה.
