Matkot – Where to?
A diverse group of artists were exposed to an out-of-the-box thinking challenge.
Each one received a pair of Matkot (beach paddle ball rackets) – material, shape and an Israeli brand – and was engaged with the given medium, creating a thrilling personal statement.
Matkot, by definition, is a “collaborative game for two participants or more”. The goal of the game is to hit a small rubber ball with a round wooden racket by two players as long as possible without dropping it. There is no loser or winner in the game. The game is played primarily on the beach or at other vacation destinations with water activities.
The ultimate conditions exist in Israel: miles of beautiful beaches and great warm weather where people like to enjoy themselves. All the right reasons to turn the game into a national pastime and an Israeli icon.
All of this and more, forced the artists to enlist tremendous mental strength to break all barriers and rid themselves from the preconceived notion of this icon.
The shape of the racket is round wood plank with a “bottle neck” shaped handle. The raw wood provides a sense of nakedness and vulnerability.
They absorbed the medium and at the same time managed to divorce themselves from it. During the creative process they were developing a dialog with the material and the idea, with the past and the future, with the “here” and the “there”, and above all with the present, with the being in the “now”. The artists were struggling with anguish as they created their artwork from their inner being while trying to bridge the contrast that the Matkot game symbolizes in the “give and take” between people.
We, the viewers, are privileged to join each artist in his/her own journey.
Some of the artists emphasized the material – took it apart and re-assembled it, cut and added and created a new world. Others put an emphasis on the idea that they wanted to communicate, from the environment to politics, from the pastoral to the upcoming storms and the painful crash. Some artists expanded the horizon into other countries and worlds including the dark inner worlds of man, his fears and desires.
“My snow and your rain, your gorge and my river meet finally on Israeli shore” (poem by Ehud Manor). The Israeli unity as expressed by this poem and the differences in culture, nationality, religion, color and gender all disappear when we engage in visual art. The art bridges all, overcomes objections, and is free from all borders.
The artists united in a wonderful collaborative effort around a single idea and proved, as always, that its sum is greater than its parts.

מטקות – הכי ישראלי
קבוצת אמנים אקלקטית נחשפה לחשיבה מאתגרת של ”יציאה מחוץ לקופסא”- כל אמן קיבל כמצע נתון, זוג מטקות – חומר, צורה ומיתוג ישראלי מובהק, והתמודד מולו באמירה אישית ויצירתית מרתקת במיוחד.
על פי הגדרתו, מטקות הוא ”משחק שיתופי מטיפוס המסירות, המיועד לשני משתתפים או יותר. מטרת המשחק להתמסר בכדור גומי באמצעות מחבטים עגולים בלבד במשך זמן רב ככל האפשר מבלי שהכדור ייפול לקרקע. אין במשחק מנצח או מפסיד. מקובל לשחק את המשחק על שפת הים או באתרי נופש נרחבים אחרים, אשר כוללים בדרך כלל רחצה ”
בישראל קיימים התנאים האולטימטיביים למשחק: רצועת חוף ארוכה, אקלים נהדר ואנשים חמים שאוהבים ליהנות… כל הסיבות להפוך את משחק המטקות ל”ספורט המולדת” ולאייקון ישראלי.
כל זאת, ועוד, הצריכו מהיוצרים לא מעט תעצומות נפש בכדי להתיר כל רסן, לעבור כל גבול ולהשתחרר ממוסכמות של סמליות האובייקט.
צורת המטקה פשוטה למראה – פלטת עץ עגולה ולה ידית בעלת ”צוואר בקבוק”. העץ נותן תחושה של חומר גולמי, עירום, חשוף.
האמנים הטמיעו את המצע ויחד עם זאת השכילו לשכוח אותו…בתהליכי העבודה הם קיימו דיאלוגים עם חומר ורוח, עבר ועתיד, כאן ושם…ומעל לכל, נוכחים בהווה, בזמן ה”עכשיו’, מתפתלים, מתייסרים ויוצרים מתוך הווייתם את יצירתם, את אחדות הניגודים שמסמל משחק המטקות בדואליות של התמסרות וקבלה בין אנשים…
אנו הצופים, זוכים להצטרף לכל אמן ואמן במסעו.
חלק מהאמנים התייחסו והדגישו את החומר – פרקו והרכיבו, חתכו וחיברו ויצרו עולם חדש…אחדים הדגישו את הנושא – מאיתני הטבע ועד לפוליטיקה, מהפסטורלי, דרך הסערות המתרגשות לבוא ועד למפולת הקשה והסוחפת. יש מהאמנים שפתחו והרחיבו את הגבולות, חצו יבשות וימים לארצות אחרות ויש שהעמיקו בנבכי נשמתו של האדם, פנימה, ודלו את יצריו, פחדיו ומאוויו.
”השלג שלך והמטר שלי, הוואדי שלך והנהר שלי נפגשים סוף סוף בחוף ישראלי” (מילים-אהוד מנור). האחדות הישראלית באה לידי ביטוי במילים אלו ובנוסף גם הבדלי תרבות, לאום, דת ומין נעלמים בפגשנו את האמנות. האמנות חוצה את הכל, מדלגת מעל לכל מחסום, חופשייה לחלוטין מכל מגדר.
בשיתוף פעולה מופלא התאחדו האמנים סביב רעיון אחד שלם והוכיחו, כמו תמיד, כי הוא הרבה יותר מסך כל מרכיביו.
